Notes |
- JSH notes on the spelling of Freeny / Freeney:
Thomas Barton Freeny Sr's. name appears in the family bible and in newspaper articles spelled "Freeny". His wife Emily, has her name spelled Freeny on her gravestone. An exception to this spelling was in the 1880 census where Thomas Barton Freeny's name was spelled Freeney. All of Thomas' and Emily Goslee's children's names appear in the family bible as Freeny. But without exception all the children spelled their names Freeney - so it would seem that is where the spelling change from Freeny to Freeney took place.
WL Howard has an old framed map of Wicomico County, MD showing the location of the Freeney blacksmith shop.
"Untimely death at age 34."
W. Lawrence Howard, M.D. notes: "He was delirious and fell out the second story window of his house, where he then hit his head on a tree stump and died."
JSH notes:
Surviving him upon his death were: His wife Emily (age 34 yrs), Children: Leonia (9 yrs), Fannie (8 yrs), Anna (6 yrs), Mae (4 yrs), Edgar (2), Barton (unborn). Parents: Peter (age 73), Elizabeth (age 60).
Ann Howard notes:
"Marguerite Howard (Grandma) found the graves of her grandparents, Thomas Barton and Emily Goslee Freeney, on their old farm in very bad shape and had the bodies and stones brought to the cemetery in Delmar. They are now buried with her parents, Thomas Barton Freeney, Jr. and Sara Webster Freeney. Grandma's grave is also there, and Gramps (William Lawrence Howard, M.D.) has a gravesite next to hers."
JSH notes:
His gravestone says he was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Freeney.
Peter and Elizabeth and Thomas B. Freeney Sr. appear on the 1860 and 1870 census together. In the 1860 census he appears as Thomas B. age 10, and in the 1870 census he appears as "Barton Freeney", age 19. Thomas B. Freeney's son had the same name and was also called Barton by his family (and Papappa by his grandchildren.)
Charles Freeny, Freeny-L notes:
"More About Thomas Barton Freeny: Jan 30, 1884, Died of typhoid fever (Source: Ralph White letter.)" [14, 15, 16]
- (Research):Feb 2005 WLH notes: "had pneumonia when he fell out of the 2nd story window, which resulted in his death"
