  • Notes
    • Mrs. Sidney E. Holdrege notes:

"I have never been able to connect our Daniel McCarty to the wealthy, or at least educated, Virginia McCarty family of the period.  I have seen reference to our Daniel's being a millwright."

      Marcia Kalapus notes:

"I am a descendent of Daniel McCarty/Agness also through his son Jacob McCarty Sr. You can obtain a copy of his will dated August 14,1782 recorded in Book 1 ,1777-1798, pg 69 drawer 48, box 72 Richmond County, Georgia..... which references Cornelius."

"The McCarty family folks that I have coresponded think Cornelius McCarty b. abt 1720 may be his father."

"I haven't been able to validate that He is the son of Dennis McCarty at this time, or that he was married to Sinah Ball" [6, 8, 9, 10]
    • (Research):I previously showed him as the son of Dennis McCarty m. Sarah Ball.  I received correspondence from Dr. William McCarty (author of "The McCartys of the Northern Neck") who indicated this was incorrect.

From Sue Abruscato 12 May 2011:

ntblTRYON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA MINUTES OF THE COURT OF PLEAS AND QUARTER SESSIONS 1769-1779 October term 1775  ntbl A Deed of Sale from Daniel McCarty & John McCarty to Lewis Limeberger for 480 acres of Land Dated the __ Day of ___ 1775 proved by Sam'l Johnston as to Daniel McCarty and ackn'd in open Court by John McCartney [sic]. Ord'd to be Registered.

      From D. Thornton:

      (http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?samuel,johnson::mccarty::3220.html)

I have come across Daniel McCarty in a book on Pioneers of Pike County, MS.

McCARTY (Page 120 and 121 of said book)

" Daniel McCarty Appeared in Lincoln (now called Tyron)County, NC in the late 1780's. He dealt extensively in land until ca 1780. He wrote his will in Lincoln Co on 8/14/1782-- an instrument which ws probated in Richmond County, GA.. a few years later.

His will named the following family:

      Wife: Agness
Sons, John, Jacob, David, and Cornelius.
Daus Jeminah, wife of Hugh Blair, (who was to inherit the slave woman Sarah. Sarah was to descend to JEminah's son Hugh upon her death.
      Ann Bennett (Husband not named)

Sons-in-law. David Tomlinson (who was to get 300 acres on Little River in GA: Samuel Johnston: John Kelly (land where McCarty then lived ---with Furniture.

Grandson: David Kelly who was to inherit the slave named Dublin.

This will also dnoted that John, Jacob, Ann Bennett, Samuel Johnston, David Tomlinson and John Kelly were to share equally in the estate of Cornelius McCarty, decd., who had lived on St Helena Island (spelled Santilina in the will) of South Carolina.

David and Cornelius had recieved their shares as they were awarded only 5 shillings each. William, Robert and Amelia (Emelia) Crawford witnessed the will.

A check of the Lincoln/Tyron County, NC deeds did not reveal anything about the ancestry of Daniel or Agness McCarty. One deed, however, related that the Cornelius McCarty, deed , of St Helena in SC, was a brother to Daniel in Lincoln County.

Prior to the McCarty family's residency in Lincoln County, they probably lived in Granville County, NC> There are deeds in Daniel's name there. As Early as 1757 Samuel Johnson sold land to Daniel MCCarty in that county.

There is the possibilitiy that the McCarty family originated in Stafford County VA> Using the family name Cornelius as a clue, it can be suspected that they were kinsmen of a Cornelius McCarty who left a will in Stafford County, VA in 1755."

Well doesn't tell me which family it applies to in MS
but I did find a John Kelly on the 1820 Census of Pike County, MS over age 45 no more info, could be one I need

Also this continued on p. 121

      Johnson-Johnston

Samuel Johnston, named as a son-in-law of Daniel MCarty, married Plive or Ollie McCarty, Samuel, who had lived in Lincoln Co. NC before mooving to Richmond County, GA, left a will in the latter-named county on 10.12.1787.

He died between that date and 7/16/1788 when the will ws presented to the court for probate. Samuel named in his will the following heirs:

Daus: Olley, Nelly, Sarah, and Maggy
Sons, Alexander, Cornelius, Daniel, Jacob and John

He devised to each of his children an equal dhare in the estate due him from Cornelius McCarty, Decd. Wife:Olley, Witnesses to the will were John Kelly, David Tomlinson, and Henry MAssey.

      1) Alexander Johnston served in the American Revolution with the Patriots under Captain John Moore.

      2) Cornelius Johnston

      3) Daniel Johnston d in 1788-- left a will in which he named his wife Verlinda. She is probably Verlinda Johnston who md on 6/23/1789 to David Elam

      4) JAcob Johnston

      5) John Johnston

      6) Olley Johnston md Thomas Whittington

      7) Nelly Johnston md Ayres Holliday b ca 1774--lived in Washington PArish LA, moved to Copiah Co. MSs, and back to Washington Parish where he died. Issue:

Proof of the marriage of the Johnston children by 1791 can be found in Columbia County. GA. Deed Book B p113: 10/22/1791: ALexander Johnson & others to Robert Allen--Thomas Whittington and Olly Whittington of Columbia Co

Also Alexander Johnson, Ayres Holliday, John Walker: Cornelius Johnson, Jacob Johnson, John Johnson: Salley Johnson: Majory Johnson of WIlkes Co, to Robert Allen of Columbia Co for 150 lbs sterling, 2 tracts on White Oak Creek to Richard Castleberry by patent on 6/29/1785; and another granted to JAcob Castleberry. Larry D. Kingsley notes (I think in error due to email from Dr. McCarty):

Daniel McCarty's WILL dated Aug 14, 1782, recorded in Book I, 1777-1798, pg 69, Drawer 48, Box 72, Richmond County, Georgia: Daniel requests the estate of Corneleus, deceased, formerly of St. Helena, Georgia, be divided among the following: Agnes (wife of Daniel), 1. a daughter, 2. a daughter, 3. Jemimah, 4. John, 5. Jacob, 6. Olley, 7. Ann, 8. Daniel, 9. Corneleus, 10. a daughter. [LDK]

Assumption: The Corneleus referenced in Daniel's WILL is probably his brother , b. Abt 1726 in Virginia and died in South Carolina. [LDK]

Bill McCarty record indicates place of birth as: Of Bewdly, Fairfax OR Lancaster, Virginia. [LDK]

Donahue GEDCOM file report indicates place of death for Daniel as Fairfax County, Virginia. Donahue references source "Genealogies of Virginia Families", Vol. III, p 591. He lists only ONE wife (Sinah BALL). [LDK]
