Mrs. Jas. Rutherford Called To Reward
Elderly Blenheim Lady Took Prominent Part In Life Of Community For Many Years
Blenheim lost one of her oldest and best loved residents in the passing last Sunday evening of Mrs. James Rutherford, at her home on Ellen Street. She had been seriously ill during the past several weeks.
The former Laura Minerva Burk, the deceased was born in Darlington township, Ont., Feb. 7, 1862, daughter of the late John M. Burk and Sarah Jane Hall, and came as a child, with her parents, to reside in Harwich township, removing to Blenheim a few years later where she spent the remainder of her long lifetime.
On Dec. 2nd, 1885, she was married to James Rutherford, one of this town's leading business men and perhaps best remembered throughout the district as owner and operator of "The Big Mill" and head of the Rutherford Milling Company. With seven children blessing their union, the Rutherford home became the centre of a very happy family life and extended warm hospitality to a host of friends. Holding membership since early girlhood with the Disciple Baptists, Mrs. Rutherford had been interested and active in the various departments of the Blenheim Baptist Church for well over a half century. Active also in social and patriotic work, she was a capable Regent of Marlbourough Chapter, I.O.D.E. for a time during the war of 1914-18 and gave two sons to the service. She was sweet and motherly in disposition, a fine Christian character whose influence will live in the lives of all who have been blessed with her friendship.
Mr. Rutherford passed away four years ago. Surviving their mother are four sons and a daughter. Miss Jessie, who has been lovingly devoted in the care of her parents, James D., Glenn C., and John, also of Blenheim, and Dr. Wilfred B. Rutherford, Lt-Col in command of the R.C. A.M.C., Military District No. 1 London, whose home is in Sarnia. Another son, Dr. Gordon H. Rutherford passed away in Chatham in 1931, and a daughter, Bessie, died in 1906. There are also eight grand children. Mr. Ernest Burk, of Cleveland, is a brother. Another brother, Ira Lester Burk, died at his home in Cleveland a few years ago.
The funeral service is being held this Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Needham Funeral Home. Pastor Roy A. Pitts, of the Baptist Church in charge. Interment will be in the family plot, Evergreen Cemetery, pallbearers being W.J. Gordon, Everton Todd, Phil Pickering, W.R. Fellows, H.M. Fleming and Mac McGregor.
Notes from R.P.Bisbee:
1) While her family used the Burk spelling, Laura used Burke
2) The name of her son is spelled Wilfrid not Wilfred
3) Gordon Hall died in January 04, 1932, not 1931 [5]
