"JOHN J. HOWELL, 68, PASSES IN CUTHBERT Prominent South Georgian Was Editor of the Leader for 28 Years. . CUTHBERT, Ga., Aug. 11. John J. Howell, 68 years of age, editor of the Cuthbert Leader for 21 years, died at his home, here Tuesday following a long illness.
Mr. Howell was a native of White Plains, Ga. He retired as editor of the Lender two yeas ago because of ill health.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o'clock Wednesday from the White Plains Baptist church and interment will be in the cemetery there.
Mr. Howell was one of the most prominent men in the State. For years he devoted much of his time in the interest of this section'a development. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and several other civic organizations. Mr. Howell also was formerly treasurer of the Georgia Press Association. Mr. Howell began his newspaper career with the Lumpkin Independent at Lumpkin, Ga., and came to Cuthbert in 1808. Ha is survived by two brothers, Henry Howell, of Cuthbert. and Edward Howell, of Durham, N. C.; two sisters. Mrs. Bertie Camp, of Atlanta, and Miss Eva Howell, of Cuthbert." |

Notes from Randolph County Georgia Vol I.:
"The Leader was begun by J.N. Stanford on April 16, 1891 and Mr. Stanford sold The Leader to Jr. J.J. Howell and Fletcher Pearson prior to 1899. Mr. Howell assumed editorship..Mr. J.J. Howell was both editor and proprietor by Jan 2, 1902. The name of the paper was changed to "The Cuthbert Leader" on Jan. 25, 1906."
"Between 1930 and 1933 J.K. Simmons & Sons was listed as publisher. On January 7, 1937 Mr. E.L. Howell was listed as editor and manager, and Mr. Henry Howell was associate editor and continued as such through 1938."
