PRETTY WEDDING OF DELMAR COUPLE Miss Sara M. Freeney Becomes Bride of William L Howard
Miss Sara Marguerite Freeney, the attractive young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barton Freeney, on Monday evening became the bride of William Lawrence Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Howard, of Federalsburg. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Leonard White, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the bride's home. Miss Freeney was attended by her sister, Miss Kathleen Freeney, and the best man was Edward Pierce, of Federalsburg. Mrs. J. Fred Stevens played the wedding music and accompanied Mrs. Elizabeth Nabb, of Federalsburg, who sang "The Sweetest Story Ever Told." The bride wore a gown of white satin, tulle and lace, and carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and valley lilies. Her hair was bound with tulle and orange blossoms and her slippers were of white satin. Miss Kathleen Freeney's frock was of orchid satin, and she carried delphinium and pink asters. The house was decorated with ferns, gladiolas and burning candles, and under an arc formed by the same decorations, the wedding was solemnized. Only the members of the immediate families and a very few personal friends were guests. Among those from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wright and Mrs. Nabb, of Federalsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Harrington, of Wilmington; Miss Katherine Tunnel, of Olney, Va.; Mrs. Isaac Brewington, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lowe. - AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM LAWRENCE HOWARD, M.D.
I was born Feb. 13, 1906 at home on our farm in the Laurel Grove neighborhood. I was delivered by the late Dr. John Duhadway whose home and office were in Harmony. Both of my parents, the late John W. Howard and Lenora Love Howard, were born in Caroline County and spent their lives there. My grandfather, Frederick Howard, migrated from England to this area at age 6. I had an older brother, the late L. Claude Howard of Caroline County, and a sister two years younger, the late Mary Howard Magee.
When I was 5, my family moved to a farm near American Corner. I attended the American Corner one-room country school for 6 1/2 years until my parents decided that it would be to our best interest to transfer my sister and me to the Federalsburg High School. At that time there were no school buses or other forms of public transportation. We provided our own transportation -a horse and carriage- for a 12 -mile round trip each day. We would leave home soon after 7 a.m. for Federalsburg, where we left our horse in the hands of an attendant at the Farmer's Shed. After a short stretch and maybe a warm up on cold days, we walked ¼ mile uphill to the school. In spite of the conveyance problems, we had very good attendance records.
I graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1923. There were 15 in our class -- 12 girls and 3 boys. Following high school I attended the University of Maryland at College Park and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1927. After teaching math and science at the Delmar, Maryland High School for three years, I returned to the University of Maryland Medical School, where I received my M.D. in 1934. I was selected to intern at University Hospital, and after completing one year as a rotating intern, I continued on for two more years as an assistant resident and then resident in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat.
After completing my residency, I began active practice in my specialty in Salisbury, Maryland and became a member of the staff at the Salisbury General Hospital. During the second World War I was declared essential in my community by the draft board, and I continued to practice EENT until after the war ended. At that point I gave up the practice of Ear, Nose, and Throat and confined my practice to Ophthalmology. I retired at age 70 after 40 years of practice.
I was married for 60 years to the late Marguerite Freeney Howard. We have three daughters: Lynn H. Howell of Rosemont, PA; Ann Howard (Bray) of Tenafly, NJ; and Diana H. Dameron of St. Petersburg, FL. Since 1988 I have been married to Mildred Hayman Howard.
