- David Couch notes:
"Mary Ann Howell married Dr. Albert Towles 6 November 1859 in Chambers County, Alabama. Mary Ann Howell Towles and Dr. Albert Towles are my great great Grandparents. Their daughter, Lizzie Lee Towles, married my great grandfather, William M. Couch."
"Dr. Towles was a surgeon in the Civil War. After the war, he came to Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, and can be found on the 1870 Anderson County Census. He sent for Mary Ann after establishing his practice in Texas, and she, her father, Isaac Howell, brothers, and sister, Carrie Ada Howell came to Texas from Chambers Co, Alabama. Dr. Towles died prior to the taking of the 1880 census. His wife, Mary Ann HOWELL Towles was a school teacher, and she taught school in East Texas, where she met Steve Robert Williams. She married Mr. Williams, but she died on 10 January 1912, and Mr. Williams remarried. " [6]

Notes |
- Paul David Couch notes:
"My great-great grandmother was Mary Ann HOWELL Towles. She was married to Dr. Albert Towles. Mary Ann Howell, her father, Isaac and her some of her sisters and brothers moved to Texas, after Dr. Towles had moved and set up practice in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. Dr. Towles and Mary Ann HOWELL had two daugthers. The reason that the Towles had no more children was that Dr. Towles died at a rather young age, and Mary Ann HOWELL Towles remarried to a Steve Robert Williams.
Coming to Texas with Mary Ann Howell Towles were her father, Isaac, brothers, William and Joseph and sister, Carrie Ada Howell. Here is the interesting aspect: My great grandfather, William M. Couch, married Dr. Towels and Mary Ann HOWELL Towles' daughter Lizzie Lee Towles on 28 November 1881 in Cherokee County, Texas. William M. Couch's brother, Silas M. Couch, married Mary Ann HOWELL Towles' sister, Carrie Ada Howell on the same day -- 28 November 1881 in Cherokee County, Texas, in a joint ceremony."
In a separate email Paul David Couch notes:
"Attached is a picture of the grave marker of Mary Ann HOWELL Towles Williams, daughter of Isaac Howell (b: 1810/1811 in Georgia. Mary Ann Howell married Dr.
She married Mr. Williams, but she died on 10 January 1912, and Mr. Williams remarried."
"The gravestone is very old, and no doubt, Steve Robert Williams put it there. There is no indication that Mr. Williams is buried with her. I went through the small Flint City Cemetery, and found that Mary Ann HOWELL Towles Williams' birth date made her the oldest person buried in the cemetery."
David Buchroeder notes:
"Born in Beulah Alabama On Plantation. Died of blood poisoning. Schoolteacher, Missionary Baptist"
Myrna Scott notes:
"Mary Ann Howell came to Texas in 1872/3 with her two daughters and her father, sisters and two brothers. Her husband Albert Towles was already in Texas having come here after the Civil War."
"Albert Towles was in the area by 1870 as he is listed on the U.S. Census Records of Anderson Co., Texas and she is listed in Lee Co., Alabama with her two daughters as head of her own household. On the 1880 Census records of Cherokee Co., Mary Ann is listed as a Widow in the the household of her father with her youngest daughter."
"Mary Ann (Howell) Towles taught school in Tecula, Old Reynolds, Afton Grove, Flint and Bullard, Texas. While teaching school in Flint she was residing with the Carter family and met and married Steve Robert Williams, a widower, and they married, settled in the area and went to the Missionary Baptist Church in Flint which she help start. She died in 1910-12 from blood-poisoning from broken bones caused from a fall."
"The Williams (step-grandchildren) all loved her. Only a few of her own grandchildren are old enough to recall anything about Mary or Mollie as she was sometimes called."
"My Uncle Alvin remembers her love of children and kindness to all as well as my father, Roy, recalling the same traits of his grandmother."
"She is buried in a marked grave in the Flint,Texas Cemetery about half the distance of the little road which makes a curve through this cemetery if you take the 2nd gate from the street going South into the cemetery." [7, 8, 9]
