      1881 Canadian Census: born "on sea", age 63, Occupation: Comptroller, Married, Irish ethnic origin, Church of England. Dorchester.  Other members of household Mary Hickman age 63. (Census Place Dorchester, Westmorland, New Brunswick )


      Todd Gilbert notes:

      "...was at various times postmaster and collector of customs for the port of Dorchester. He also served as deputy provincial treasurer for the township. The 1851 census listed this resident as shoemaker as his father had been before. Like all 'pioneer' settlers son John was also a farmer who provided the necessities of life for his family and neighbours."

      Marlene Hickman notes:

      "July 28, 1865 issue of The Borderer he was listed as the Secretary of the Dorchester Agricultural Society.  He would have been 48 years old." [17, 18]

During the past few years, however, owing to failing health, he has not been engaged in business. The deceased leaves a son, John H. HICKMAN and a daughter, Mrs. W.D. DOUGLAS of Amherst, N.S. Three brothers also survive him, John HICKMAN and William HICKMAN of Dorchester and James S. HICKMAN, Amherst, as well as two sisters, Mrs. W.J. WELDON, Moncton and Mrs. W.B.
