p. 343 - "William Whittington was one of the most distinguished of Somerset's worthies of all times; while the offices held by him, both under the Proprietary and Royal Governments, make up a roll of haonorable achievement: magistrate, high sheriff,collector of tabacco export tax in Somerset for Lord Baltimore, assemblyman, treasurer of the Eastern Shore, militia officer and finally a member of the Council of State. Whittington, Protestant though he truly was, (a Church of England man), seems to have been strongly pro-Lord Baltimore and anti-"Associator," and though he apparently worked well in harness with the Royal Government of William and Mary, thre is from the pen of a contemporary the cristalization of the opinion of his time: "Major William Whittington [was] always accounted a Jacobite."

Colonel William Whittington II Scion of the distinguished family was born in Northhampton County, Virginia about 1650 and dwelt in the colony until 1682. He was the son of William Whittington I and Elizabeth Weston Whittington and was our first American born forebear, likewise the first to have dwelt in Maryland.
He was a Captain of the horse in Northhampton County, Virginia and in 1680 a Civil Officer, and burgess for Accomac. Some time prior to 1680 he had settled at Chance, Somerset County. Maryland, for in that year he became high sheriff of the County, so remaining from 1696-1700. In September 1684 he is found described in a document as "a Somerset County Merchant." Certainly by the summer of 1689 he was well established.
From 1701 he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was burgess of Somerset County from 1692 to 1695 and 1700 to 1704.
The Upper House Journal bears his name as a member of Maryland between 1708 and 1716, in the county, for at that time we find him occupying the office of High Sheriff of Somerset. His career as Sheriff, his clash with the authorities of the Provincial Government of the Associates and his final removal from office have been reviewed at length. That Whittington was a stormy petrel in office is quite evident but his ability, trustworthiness and popularity are equally manifest.
William Whittington’s sympathy with Lord Baltimore’s cause was no doubt the reason for his appointment in (approx) l69l, as tax collector, on behalf of his Lordship, of the tobacco export tax in Somerset County.
With the establishment of the Royal Government in Maryland, William Whittington was elected a representative from Somerset County to the 1st General Assembly under that regime which met in May 1692. He continued a member of the Lower House of Assembly until 1695 when he again became High Sheriff of Somerset. In 1695 he appears as treasurer for the Eastern Shore of the province and as a member of the Court of Somerset County, 1695—1694.
The Office of High Sheriff of Somerset County seems to have been the center of attraction for William Whittington
and we find him again serving in that capacity from 1695— 1698.
In June 1697, George Layfield and Thomas Dixon, members of Somerset Court complained to the Governor and Council against Whittington asking for his removal because of misfeasance of his office.
The specific charges do not appear in the Council Records. However, this complaint was strongly offset by a certain representation sent from the Grand Jury of that County Court concerning his chivalry and wherein they pray he may be continued in said office, There was much ado a— bout this matter with reference back and forth from Council to Court and Court to Council with the final vindication of Whittington whom we find continuing to hold the office of
High Sheriff of Somerset County in July 1698.
In 1699 William Whittington was again returned from Somerset as a member of the Lower House of Assembly in succession to Francis Jenckins, who had been advanced to the Governor’s Council. Whittington continued as a representative from Somerset in the Lower House for several years.
It is during this period that in a description of members of the House, we find the item: Somerset County Major William Whittington always accounted a Jacobite, Mr. Walter Lane and Mr. Samuel Collins are silly drunken fellows easily persuaded by Whittington. Lane and Collins were at this time two other representatives from Somerset in the Lower House.
To the Governor and Council in Assembly at Annapolis on October 26, 1709.
(The honorable Colonel William Whittington produced her Majesty’s letter directing he should be sworn of her Council which was done and the said Colonel Whittington took his place at the Board.)
Whittington continued as a member of the Council certainly until May 31, 1717, when the Governor informed that body (sitting as Upper House of Assembly) that he had received a letter from Colonel Whittington telling of his “indisposition and desiring to be excused from his attendance this Assembly.” The Council Minutes do not record Whittington as again in attendance between this date and the time of his death in the early spring of 1720.
In addition to the various civil offices of responsibility and honor held by him, we find Whittington from time to time occupying the Militia offices of Captain, Major and Colonel.
William Whittington (IT) 1650—1720 lived in the southern section of Somerset County below the Pocomoke River. (This section of Somerset County became in 1742 Worcester County.)
Whittington became an extensive landholder and owner of a large and valuable personal estate. His will, dated February 28, 1719 with codicil March 13, 1719—20, and probated April 11, 1720, is an interesting document (Will of William Whittington, Worcester Registry of Wills, Liber M.H. 3 — P 172.)
Among its many items are two which show the charitable disposition of the man: (1) He gave part of his Cedar Neck and Sandy Wharf tracts of land to certain trustees for maintenance and teaching of 6 poor children at a time “to read and learn the fundamentals of the Christian Religion.” (2) He directed his sons and daughters “to make a payment to the Justices (of the Court) for the use of the poor.”
His death occurred in the spring of 1720 and he is buried in lower Somerset County now Worcester County. He was 70 years of age at the time of death.

Descendants of William Whittington and his wife, Esther Littleton, are referred to Matthew Wise's book, "The Littleton Heritage." Littleton descendants will find that Mr. Wise has traced not only the descendants of Esther Littleton, but her ancestors, as well.
Hannah Whittington was born in Somerset Co., MD about 1696. She married Edmond Hough. Clayaton Torrence "Old Somerset" says she was daughter of Esther Littleton; Matthew Wise "The Littleton Heritage" says she was daughter of Hannah Hopkins.

Sarah Hearne, sister of Jacob of 1790, married Lyttleton Whittington. I wrote to one of their descendants, Miss C. Cordelia Smith, Versailles, Ky., for their family history, genealogy, etc.; Nov. 23, 1893, she sent me what I now give as she sent it. It is interesting, but quite difficult for me to understand fully and keep the proper trace of descendants, etc., but doubtless will be more familiar to the immediate family.
She writes:
Col. William Whittington came from England in the first settlement of this country, to Northampton Co., Va., near Cherrystone, and from there removed to Indian Town, Worcester Co., Md. He was so small when born that his nurse put him into a quart measure and shut down the lid; when a man grown, he measured seven feet in height; he was a Presbyterian.
His children are: William, who married Elizabeth Taylor; Esther, Married Isaac Morris; Hannah, married Huff; Atalanta, married Stephen White; Southey, married Mary Forsett.
Children of Atalanta and Stephen White: Mary, married Brinkley; Esther, married A. Sterling; and William , married Priscilla Polk.
Children of * * * Southey Whittington, who married Mary Forsett: Isaac and Stevenson, twins, and Sarah. Isaac married E. Wishart, Stevenson married Sarah Coulbourn, and Sarah married B. Polk.
* * * Isaac Whittington's children: Hannah, married Hanly Handy in Maryland; Ann, married William Cox, Maryland; Joshua, married Mary Marshall; and Lyttleton, married Sarah Hearne, daughter of Jacob Hearne of 1740.
