Origin of Henry Howell's given names.
Origin of Henry Howell's given names.
Handwritten notes by Betty H. Traver.

Origins of Henry Alonzo Howell's given names by Elizabeth Howell Traver :

Henry Alonzo Howell was named for two soldiers killed in wars. "Henry" was for Henry Heard, Henry Alonzo Howell's uncle, who died at Pine Mountain during Sherman's March to the Sea in August 1864.

Alonzo McBride was the son of John McBride, surveyor general of Georgia. After John McBride died, the family moved with the Howell's to Houston County (Perry, GA). Being the oldest, he enlisted in Gen. Andrew Jackson's war against the Indians in Alabama, where he was killed. His will is in the courthouse in Perry, Jimmy Brittain's mother saw it written just before he left for the Army. Alonzo Church, early president of the University of Georgia was John McBride's best friend, so he named his eldest son for him. [JSH notes: Alonzo Church b. 1793 in Brattleboro, VT, graduated Middlebury College and moved to GA in 1816]

  • Notes
    • "Musician, Composer"

From "The Cuthbert Times", Cuthbert, GA, Feb 6, 1958:

"Henry A. Howell, Cuthbert citizen, claimed by death"

"Cuthbert friends regret to learn of the death of Henry Alonzo Howell, 91, in a Keysville, GA hospital, Wednesday, Jan 29.  Mr. Howell had resided in Cuthbert since 1924.  He formerly resided in Atlanta, where he was a teacher of music from 1886 to 1903.  Born in White Plains, Ga., Mr. Howell studied piano at the Boston Conservatory of Music, and also under Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna, Austria, teacher of the famous Paderewski.  He lived for five years in Berlin, Germany, and in Vienna where he continued his studies and taught music."

"Returning to America in 190_ he opened a studio in Philadelphia where he taught piano until 1924.  On the death of his wife in that year Mr. Howell moved to Cuthbert where for several years he conducted a dairy farm and specialized in fine Jersey cattle."

"Graveside services for Mr. Howell were held on Friday, Jan 31, at 2 p.m., in the cemetery of the White Plains Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. S. Williams officiating, assisted by the REv. C. J. Granade of the First Baptist Church, Cuthbert, his pastor."

"Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. A.M. (Alma Louise) Howell, and three grandsons. John Spencer, Edward S. and Peter Howell, all of New York City; a sister, Mrs. G.A. Camp of Atlanta, a brother, E. L. Howell, of Cuthbert, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert B. Graham, of Barrington, R.I."

"A familiar figure in Cuthbert, Mr. Howell retained his faculties to an unusual age and was interested in the affairs of his community, and active as long as his physical condition permitted.  He had many friends here and was highly esteemed.  Mr. Howell would have reached his 92nd year of age, had he lived until February."

Notes from Randolph County Georgia Vol I.:

"The Leader was begun by J.N. Stanford on April 16, 1891 and Mr. Stanford sold The Leader to Jr. J.J. Howell and Fletcher Pearson prior to 1899.  Mr. Howell assumed editorship..Mr. J.J. Howell was both editor and proprietor by Jan 2, 1902.  The name of the paper was changed to "The Cuthbert Leader" on Jan. 25, 1906."

"Between 1930 and 1933 J.K. Simmons & Sons was listed as publisher.  On January 7, 1937 Mr. E.L. Howell was listed as editor and manager, and Mr. Henry Howell was associate editor and continued as such through 1938."

      Elizabeth Howell Traver notes:

"He moved from Philadelphia to Cuthbert in about 1923."

      J. Spencer Howell (Henry's grandson) interview notes:

He met Henry in 1953 for the first and only time.  The meeting took place at Henry's home in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1953 when Henry was 86 and Spencer was 24 years old.  Spencer was on leave from his Army training post in Ft. Benning, GA.  Although no family history was discussed Henry appeared to be genuinely happy to meet his grandson.  Although he was not introduced, Spencer recalls there were two elderly women at Henry's house when he visited - perhaps his sisters Bertha Howell Camp (widowed), age 84, and Mildred Eva Howell, age 78.

Other than this meeting, Henry had little or no contact with Nellie, his children or grandchildren, after the divorce.  J. Spencer Howell does not recall his father or his aunt ever speaking to, or writing to Henry. [36, 37]
