A Memorial Service for David O. Pollard, III, 87, of Lubbock and formerly of Brownfield will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in the Tumbleweed Room at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Towers, 801 Ave. Q.
He died Sunday, May 15, 2011 in Lubbock.
He was born May 6, 1924 in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended school in several different states and graduated from Santa Monica (CA) High School.
He received two college degrees, a Masters in Linguistics from the University of Chicago in 1951 and a Masters in Mathematics with emphasis in Computer Sciences from Texas Tech in 1977.
He was a teacher for numerous years at Brownfield ISD and Whitharral ISD. He also lectured classes at Texas Tech University.
He is survived by his sons, David O. Pollard IV and his wife Julie of Hurst,Texas, Alaric Pollard of Lubbock, Martin Carpenter of Lauderhill, FL; a daughter, Janey McIlroy and her husband Larry of Levelland; a sister, Marion Pickens of Newport Beach, California; grandson, Jason Pollard of Hurst, Texas; granddaughter, Latova Ewings and husband David of Levelland; and great-grandson; Hayden Ewings of Levelland.
He was married and widowed four times: Barbara Clark of California, who predeceased him in 1954, Babara Rose of New York (1968), Sue Whitson of Brownfield, TX (1978) and Jane Carpenter of Brownfield, TX (2005).
David was one of the first American members of Mensa, the high IQ Society, joining in New York in the early 1960's, and helped establish a Lubbock chapter in the 1970's.
David had a great love of books and spent many hours over the years at the Texas Tech Library. His other hobby was watching movies that arrived at the local Theaters and enjoyed telling others
