"The following information was sent many years ago by Douglas Campbell of Blenheim, grandson of both Peter and Malcolm to George Campbell, son of Peter and grandson of Malcolm:"

"Two brothers, Malcolm and Peter Campbell of Inverary, Argleshire, emigrated to New York State in 1821, being eight weeks on the ocean, with their wives and families; they landed at Quebec; thence by boat to a port opposite Utica; thence by oxcart or wagon to the hills near Utica.  Malcolm Campbell purchased in 1822 a farm in Herkimer County, New York State, known as the Walsh Tract in the 3rd Allotment in the town of Russia of 100 acres for $850.00.  This property he held for eight years till 1830 when he sold to one William Forest for the sum of $784.00.  He then emigrated to Kent County, Ontario, Canada, where he purchased a farm of 200 acres, described as lot 4 on the 12th Concession, Township of Howard."

"Peter Campbell settled on the Moon Farm in Herkimer County in the Town of Russia in 1822; thence after 8 years they sold the farm and went to Ontario, Canada and purchased 200 acres, described as Lot 17, in the 7th Concession in the Township of Harwich in the County of Kent."

** Archie is a grandson of Malcolm CAMPBELL [1787-1862] and Isabel SMITH [1784-1841], son of Neil CAMPBELL and Flora JOHNSON, first cousin of George Alexander CAMPBELL, brother of St. Thomas mill-owner John CAMPBELL [1847-1914], and grandfather of eighteen, including Douglas Argyle CAMPBELL of Hollywood, California.

** 1821 - Malcolm CAMPBELL & Isabel SMITH leave Scotland and settle in Town of Russia, Herkimer County, New York,  joining Smith and Blue families who moved there before the War of 1812.
 
** 1830 - Malcolm Campbell, Isabel SMITH, & other family members move from Town of Russia, Herkimer County, NY, to Howard Township, Kent County, Ontario, via the Eire Canal (which opened in 1825).

Died: Kent County, Ontario, Canada - near Morpeth.

Malcolm married Isabel Smith on 20 Feb 1808 in South Knapdale, Argyllshire, Scotland. Isabel (daughter of Peter Smith and Margaret Macmillan) was born in 1784 in Knapdale, Argyllshire, Scotland; died on 28 May 1841 in Kent County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Morpeth Cemetery, Morpeth, Chatham-Kent Municipality, Ontario, Canada. "As for Peter Campbell's parents: if he had a Duncan as either his 1st or 2nd son then his father's name has to be John, Duncan or Peter (the name rule would not permit him to give his own name to either his 1st or 2nd son even if it was also his father's name). There were exceptions but they were extremely rare."

"If Isabel Ferguson was the daughter of Isabel McNair and Mary was her 1st daughter, then Mary would very probably be named for her father's mother, that is for Peter's mother"

"The word "lawful" was not always written in the record but when the child was not a lawful one they made no bones about saying so and were sometimes crude about it...'born in fornication'; 'born in adultery', etc."

May 17, 1741, Isabell, daughter to John Ferguson in Barvarch and Isabell McNewair.

The above may be the birth record of Peter Campbell's wife but we can't prove it. McNewair=McNair

Excerpt of a transcription of a letter handwritten on a Christmas Card from Lee & Earle Price to Jean Wallbridge date unknown:

"I have found the birth of an Isabel Ferguson whose parents seem to fit better, genealogically speaking, than do the ones found by Mrs. Fleming, which I put in the Campbells from Auchindrain. There the parents were John Ferguson & Isabel McNair. Since the 2nd son seems to have been John that seemed to fit, but it did not account for the 1st dau being Mary. Now we have this birth:"

'Isobel, dau to Duncan Ferguson in Craeleckan and Mary Campbell - Sept 14, 1740'

"The marriage of Duncan Ferguson and Mary Campbell, who came from the parish of Glassary, took place on Feb 2, 1738. "

"At the time I wrote "The Campbells from Auchindrain" I had had experience only with records of Inverary Parish and did not believe that there could be duplicate records. Now I know that records were sometimes duplicated, when people moved & attended a different church or a new minister came along. I am now inclined therefore to accept Duncan Campbell and Mary McIntyre as the parents of Peter Campbell."

'1744, no month. Archibald, son to Duncan Campbell & Mary McIntryre was baptised and right below'

"I now think Patrick and Peter were the same person & your ancestor. The father was a tailor. With both fathers named Duncan & both mothers named Mary, you can be darned sure the 1st son was named Duncan & the 1st daughter Mary."
