    Notes
    Married:
    • Conversation notes with Margaret Helen Davison Lathrop:

"She was the true love of his life - Helen Hastings and Harold eloped to Boston and were married at the Copley Plaza in 1914"

      Notes from Philip Spencer:

"I had also spoken to Mrs Lathrop and she told me the same thing (eloped to Boston), along with a couple of other stories. However, I have recently found these 2 news clips:

      September 3, 1914

      The Jeffersonian-Democrat
Invitations are out for the marriage, on September 16th, to Miss Helen Brown Hastings, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Brown of South Pickering Street,Brookville,  to Harold D. Davison, of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, at Boston, Mass

      September 10, 1914

      The Clarion Democrat
The invitations have been issued for the marriage of Helen Brown Hastings, a granddaughter of Mr and Mrs James L Brown of Brookville, and a niece of Frank K Brown and Mrs Lewis Callner . The happy groom to be is Mr Harold D Davison of St Catherines Ontario.

      Notes from Hal Lathrop:

When the Davison Lumber company was sold [in 1902] it was purchased by a company associated with Helen Hastings' family.

Ralph Burgoyne notes in an article in the Bridgewater Bulletin, April 8, 1981:

"The Mill, the largest ever in Nova Scotia, was built by an American Company headed by John Hastings of Michingan in 1902.  They bought out E.D. Davison & Sons lumber business and operated under the name Davison Lumber Company.  They built the mill across the lake from Springfield and named the place Hastings, after John Hastings."

      JSH notes:

So, Harold "Skipper" Doran Davison was 12 years old at the time E. D. Davison and Sons was purchased by John Hastings in 1902.  John Hastings would become Harold Davison's father-in-law in 1914 - 12 years later. [14, 15]

On why Budd is called "Skipper" by his grandchildren: "As children we kept saying "Bug" instead of "Budd", so he asked us to call him something else - anything else. We liked sailing with him so he suggested "Skipper" - and we agreed.
