Notes |
- Notes from "The Family of James Stephens:"
Malcom was born on August 24, 1855 on the Campbell homestead, land which had been chosen by his grandfather in about 1818 when he left New York State and came to settle in Upper Canada.
Malcom received his education at Slabtown school, a small one-room school house on the Talbot Road. Helping with the farm chores, and learning the principles and practices of farming from his father, he worked at hoem and in the community until he was almost twenty-five. In 1882, he went to Manitoba in company with his parents and msot of the family. At this time the area around Portage la Prairie was considered as fine a place to settle as could be found in the province so the Campbells purchased a tract of land there. Mack and his brother Neil lived on the property and worked together, while his parents lived in town Nearby neighbors were the Clevelands, Noble and Annie, with their family of four boys and two girls. Many happy hours were spent at the Cleveland home, and soon one of the girls, Bessine, became Mack's bethrothed.
After their marriage, about 1891 or 1982, Mack and Bessie moved to Yakima, Washington. Brother Edward had preceded them there and had chosen this part of the country as fine farming land. They lived there for many years, and it wa there their family of six were born and raised. On their farm they grew mixed crops such as hay, hops, apples and pears.
About 1925 Mack with his two sons, Leslie and Clifford, went into soft-fruit farming until, about six years later, the farm was traded for an apartment house in the city of Yakima.
Living into semi-retirement, Mack died May 29th, 1943, and his wife Bessie about ten years later.
Emily Campbell Price notes:
"moved to Manitoba and thence to Yakima, Washington" [2, 3]
