  • Notes
    • From Charles Levi:

"She attended high school in Chatham and then the University of Toronto, graduating B.A. 1919 (same year as Robert).  She then went to Detroit to work with the YMCA as an industrial inspector.  She married Robert in June, 1924 in London, Ontario, according to U of T Alumni records. "

"On a recent visit to California, I checked the San Francisco Chronicle for February 13, 1975 and found her obituary on page 27.  She died February 9,1975 in San Francisco at the stated age of 78, and is listed as the widow of Robert Spencer Stone and the mother of two living children and seven grandchildren.  She is also listed as 'an active worker in Girl Scots of the U.S.A. for many years'." Dear Mr. Howell,

I noticed on rootsweb that you had some information posted under ID's
I129 and I133 about Robert Spencer Stone and Wilhemena Crawford.  I have
some interest in Wilhemina Crawford because she served as a executive
member of the University College Womens Undergraduate Association, an
organization I have been studying for some years.  I have been looking
for an obituary or death notice for her, if you find one I would be
      grateful.

While I am contacting you, let me correct some of your information and
add some more.  According to the records of the University of Toronto,
Robert Spencer Stone was BA 1919, not 1917 as you indicate.  He enroled
at the University in 1917, after service in France during WWI with the
Royal Flying Corps (wounded April 24, 1917).  Since he did not return to
Canada until November of 1917, it is impossible that he could have
received his BA in May of that year. [Source: University of Toronto Roll
of Service 1914-1918.]  Further Robert received his M.B. degree (not
M.D.) from the University of Toronto 1924.  In those days the University
still gave the degree of Bachelor of Medicine.  He may have received an
M.D. at some later date.  That I don't know about.  He lived in Detroit
from 1925-1928 and then was on staff at the University of California
from 1928-1962.  He died in San Francisco in 1966.

Now, as for Wilhemnia, she was born "Wilena Rose Crawford" in June, 1896
in Niagara Falls, Ontario.  I am pretty sure about 1896, less sure about
Ontario.  There is a chance she was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y.  Her
father was John Crawford, a Presbyterian Minister.  She attended high
school in Chatham and then the University of Toronto, graduating B.A.
1919 (same year as Robert).  She then went to Detroit to work with the
YMCA as an industrial inspector.  She married Robert in June, 1924 in
London, Ontario, according to U of T Alumni records.  In another year or
two the Provincial marriage records will be available for 1924 and I can
confirm this.  After that her life is a mystery. although I assume she
      went to California with Robert.

I hope all that helps, and if you do find anything on the death of
Wilhemnia, please let me know.  Also, if you have sources that
contradict my information, I'd like to know about that too.

      Sincerely,

      Charles Levi,
